Scottie Scheffler woke up this morning trailing by three heading into the final round of the TOUR Championship. Just 18 holes later…Scheffler was hoisting his second FedEx Cup trophy by the same margin he trailed by entering the day.
That’s simply just what World No. 1 does. It is the third time in his career he won after trailing by three or more strokes entering the final round. He fired rounds of 65-67-66-66 en route to his 22nd PGA TOUR victory.
There is seemingly an intriguing backstory to every club in Scottie’s bag. Whether it be his switch to Spider Tour X leading to 18 wins since 2024, testing P·7TW’s after a practice round with Tiger himself or his most recent pre-playoffs switch to Qi4D driver.
We’re going to take you inside every one of those switches to show you what it takes to build a FedEx Cup winning bag.
THE SWITCH TO Qi4D DRIVER
Scottie is as exacting and meticulous as they come in regards to his equipment. He will be the first to tell you that there’s simply certain things about a golf club that make him tick. That type of precision explains why he has won as much as he has. However, when there are noticeable gains in performance…that’s when Scottie will make the switch.
The noticeable gains with Qi4D driver came in the way of ball speed for Scottie. He proved that on the 17th hole of the TOUR Championship sending his drive 350 yards to the left side of the fairway at 185 MPH ball speed.
“From the beginning, Scottie told us that Qi4D has been faster and it holds the spin better than his previous driver. Since then, we have worked relentlessly based off his feedback to give him a driver that perfects every performance variable that is unique to him. To his core, Scottie is a shot maker and the look and speed of the driver he won with today enabled him to be exactly that off the tee.”
Adrian Rietveld
Scottie and our tour team perfected the build of his Qi4D from the four adjustable weights down to how it suited Scottie’s shot-making eye at address.
Shot making was aplenty off-the-tee in his first win with Qi4D at the FedEx St. Jude Championship as Scottie finished the tournament 11th in SG:OTT at 2.251 and 12th in that category in the final round (1.273). During his record setting 61 in the second round, Scottie was T2 in driving accuracy hitting 11 of 14 fairways.
In Memphis he averaged 181.66 MPH ball speed with driver and in his second start with Qi4D at the BMW Championship he averaged 180.86 MPH. He had multiple drives at the TOUR Championship above 180 MPH, well past his season average this year of 178.78 MPH (entering the TOUR Championship).

SCOTTIE & SPIDER KEEP ON WINNING
Scottie’s switch to Spider Tour X continues to be one of the most consequential gear switches in recent history netting 18 wins since the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational. It is similar in nature to his switch to Qi4D driver that it came from months of calculated work dissecting every inch (pun intended) of his approach to putting to identify the best flat stick for his game.
That work is the gift that keeps on giving as Scottie has racked up wins at The Masters, PGA Championship, Open Championship, TOUR Championship, PLAYERS Championship and a Gold Medal.

“In testing at the end of 2023, we identified something that could help him know he was striking the ball on the center of the face. Instead of the sight dot he had on his blade, we started to re-introduce True Path and we were on to something in terms of his eyes and what he thought he was doing vs. what he was actually doing when hitting his putts. With a Spider putter there’s so much tech that you can see and also not see, all helping him hit better putts more often.” — Adrian Rietveld

WHY SCOTTIE PLAYS P·7TW IRONS
As the story goes, Scottie was playing P·730 irons during the final round of the 2020 Masters when he was paired with Tiger Woods. Scottie watched Tiger hit his irons around Augusta National and left wanting to test the irons designed by Tiger himself.
After a testing session back home in Dallas proved next level playability without sacrificing distance, Scheffler put the P·7TW’s in the bag. Since the switch, he has won 22 PGA TOUR events, two green jackets, a PGA Championship and The Open Championship while setting records that have only been done by Tiger himself.
INSIDE THE FIT: SCOTTIE’S Qi4D 7-WOOD
Similar to when he did so prior to winning the PGA Championship, Scottie elected to replace his 3-iron with a Qi4D 7-wood. His 7-wood launches about 1.5-2 degrees higher than his three-iron with about 1500 more RPM of spin. The goal was to produce a 240-carry number more consistently than he normally does with his 3-iron. Scottie’s self-dubbed “high one” launched at 14.9° at 5175 RPM carrying 245-yards at 160 MPH ball speed.
TaylorMade Senior Tour Manager Adrian Rietveld made the 7-wood more upright to get the club to sit squarer at address. The spec of his 7-wood is built closer to a 5-wood spec to properly gap with his 3-wood.
“We fit his 3-wood shorter, so it did not go further than his desired distance with that club, so when you fit a standard 5-wood it goes too far. You don’t want to add loft to a 5-wood because it closes the face, so we built a 5-wood spec in a 7-wood head. It has the dynamics of a 5-wood but with the spin and launch conditions of a 7-wood to produce the carry number he wants with that club.”
Adrian Rietveld
20 of Scottie’s 22 PGA TOUR wins have come with a TaylorMade fairway wood in the bag! He first put a TM fairway in at the 2022 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and has relied on the consistency of TaylorMade’s fairway wood technology ever since.
