After waiting most of his career to win a major singles title, HEAD Tennis
ambassador Alexander Zverev has now won two in the same year!
The 29-year-old German, who finally joined the Grand Slam roll of honour by
winning the French Open in June, has now added the 2026 US Open men’s singles
title. Zverev beat the American Ben Shelton in Sunday’s showdown in New York,
sealing victory in his sixth Grand Slam final.
Zverev first played in a major final in New York six years ago, and went on to lose
finals in Paris, Melbourne, and London. But he is now the only man to win two
Grand Slam singles titles this year, and the world number one ranking is within
reach.
Competing as the top seed in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, Zverev
needed five sets to get through his first two matches, indeed he came within two
points of exiting in the first round. But he then settled into the rhythm that has made
him the most consistent male player of the year.
“We are delighted with Alexander’s second major title,” said Ottmar Barbian,
executive vice-president of HEAD’s racquet sports division, “We worked closely with
him on the evolution of the Gravity racquet, and we knew very early that he is a
quality player. We always expected him to win at least one major, and it’s no
surprise that he has now won two, and on two different surfaces as well. He now
deserves to be counted as one of the sport’s greats.”
The German, whose father Alexander and brother Mischa were professional tennis
players, now has 26 tour-level titles, including this year’s two majors and the
Olympic singles gold medal he won in Tokyo in 2021.
Zverev endorses the HEAD Gravity range of racquets, and helped shape the new
Gravity that came out in 2019.
